Bihar “Birthplace of Two Religions” is the origin of the two biggest religions in the world, namely Buddhism and Jainism. 1. Gaya

Gaya is mostly known as the birthplace of Buddhism as Gautama Buddha attained nirvana in this holy site. Gaya has temples of great beauty and heritage and makes it one of the most desired. The beautiful city is surrounded on three sides by hills and the meandering Phalgu River. Bodh Gaya is the most important Buddhist pilgrimage destination in the world. The town is also home to dozens of Buddhist monasteries, maintained by various Buddhist countries. 2. Nalanda

Nalanda, is famous all over the world for the The Ancient International Monastic University established in 5th century BC, which taught Vedas, Logic, Grammar, Medicine, Meta-Physics, Prose Composition and Rhetoric. Nalanda district is popularly known as Biharsharif. Nalanda is located about 75 km away from Bodh Gaya. It’s a very beautiful historical place, mostly famous for the ancient magadha empire 800 years ago and Buddhist culture. If you are in Bodh Gaya for a few days, then Nalanda is a must visit place. Archeological ruins of India’s oldest University i.e. Nalanda University is worth watching. 3. Munger

Munger city is the headquarters of Munger District, in the Indian state of Bihar. Historically, Munger is known for its manufacturing of iron articles such as firearms and swords. 4. Vaishali

Vaishali is a great Buddhist pilgrimage and also the birthplace of Lord Mahavira. It is said that the Buddha visited this place thrice and spent quite a long time here. The Buddha also delivered his last sermon at Vaishali and announced his Nirvana here. After his death, Vaishali also held the second Buddhist Council. Vaishali has been the first republic of the world !! Vaishali is well connected by road from Patna, the state capital of the Indian state of Bihar. 5. Patna

Patna is a city which is blessed with some of the most beautiful and historical attractions which reflects the heritage of the place. One of the oldest living cities in the world, Patna, the capital of Bihar, stands on the banks of River Ganges, proudly cradling in its heart the city’s heritage, patriotism and culture. 6. Rajgir

Rajgir is famous for seven hot water springs or Saptarshi, which come and mingle together into a big pool of warm water, named Brahmakund, a sacred place for Hindus where water from seven different springs (Saptarshi) merge and is notable for its healing effects.This is a holy place for bathing of the Hindus, Buddhists and Jains alike. Among the festivals here, Rajgir Mahotsav is the most important one and it is celebrated each year in the month of October and is accompanied by classical performances of Indian music and dance. 7. Sasaram

Sasaram, sometimes also spelled as Sahasram, is an ancient historical city and a municipal corporation region with a history that goes to thousands of years. During the prehistoric age, Buddha walked through this way and lived for some days and then traveled to Gaya to be enlightened with verity and wisdom under the Mahabodhi tree,the city is also known as gateway of “Vihar” to visit rest “Bihar” including Gaya, Rajgriha, and Nalanda. Famous places to visit in Sasaram are Sher Shah Suri Tomb, Manjhar Kund, Dhua Kund, Maa Tara Chandi Temple, Ganesh Temple, Rohtasgarh Fort, Dhuwa Kund and Nandan Waterfall.

8. Bhagalpur

Bhagalpur is an old town situated in the eastern Bihar on the bank of river Ganga. This town is famous for the production of Silk and Cotton Textiles. Bhagalpur lies in the tradition as a silk weaving center. Bhagalpur occupies the most important part in production of Oak Tasar Silk and its products. Today, Bhagalpur is most known for its silk, apart from its tombs and shrines that can be visited. Located on the bank of the River Ganga, Kuppa Ghat is most famous for the ashram of Maharshi Mehi Paramhans, one of the leading exponents of sant mat, a spiritual movement that has its origins in the 13th century. 9. Sitamarhi

Sitamarhi, believed to be the birth place of Lord Rama’s consort Devi Sita, is one such place that has become a frequently visited pilgrimage destination. It is situated in the northern part of Bihar Located in the Sitamarhi District of Bihar in East India, the town is well-known for an array of temples and religious sites. Janki Temple, Sita Temple, Haleshwar Sthan and Panth-Pakar. Sitamarhi is a town of great historical importance and it has a large number of modern tourist attractions. Rivers like Baghmati, Aghwara, Lakhandei and Manusmara flow through the Sitamarhi District and the northern part of Sitamarhi District is located in the foothills of the Himalaya. 10. Begusarai

It is the birthplace of famous Hindi poet Rashtrakavi Ramdhari Singh Dinkar. ( However most people know Munger as his birthplace as Begusarai was the part of Munger during his birth and much of his lifetime.) and Eminent Historian Professor Ram Saran Sharma. Begusarai is part of the historic Mithila region. It is of high historical importance. Begusarai has other tourist attractions like Simaria Ghat and Jai Mangla Temple. It majorly depends on agriculture now, but also has industries for energy production, refinery and fertilizers. It was the center of Indigo production and marketing under British Rule. 11. Champaran

Mahatma Gandhi’s first Satyagraha was experimented on the soil of Motihari in the then Champaran district and, thus, Champaran has been the starting point of India’s independence movement launched by Gandhi. Buddhist Stupa: Located in Kesariya near Motihari, it is known to be the largest Buddha Stupa in the world. 12. Sultanpur

Sultanpur is the administrative seat of the District of Sultanpur and belongs to the Faizabad Division, located near the right bank of Gomti. Places of interest in Sultanpur are Victoria Manzil, Christ Church and Chimanlal Park. The city has a large number of temples and palaces. Major points of attractions include the Victoria Manzil and Christ Church. Barabar Caves are believed to be the last remaining relic from the Lost Ajivika Sect and are the only remaining specimen of Ajivika history and culture. 13. Bodhgaya

Bodh Gaya is a religious site and place of pilgrimage associated with the Mahabodhi Temple Complex in Gaya district in the Indian state of Bihar. It is famous as it is the place where Gautama Buddha is said to have attained Enlightenment under what became known as the Bodhi Tree. Since antiquity, Bodh Gaya has remained the object of pilgrimage and veneration both for Hindus and Buddhists. In particular, archeological finds including sculptures show that the site was in use by Buddhists since the Mauryan period. For Buddhists, Bodh Gaya is the most important of the main four pilgrimage sites related to the life of Gautama Buddha,  the other three being Kushinagar, Lumbini, and Sarnath. 14. Buxar

Buxar is famous since the epic period for being the seat of eminent saints, battlefield of Gods and Demons as per Puranas and a combat zone between foreign invasion and countrymen in modern history. Besides, Lord Rama and his younger brother Laxman took their teachings at Buxar. The city has been a witness to much historic evidence. Buxar with its rich historical heritage is a must visit destination in Bihar. 15. Madhubani

Madhubani is also famous for its world class paintings popularly called as Mithila paintings. These paintings are created mostly by women. Natural colors are used and paintings are done on canvases, walls, floors of sacred places, etc. Madhubani is popular for its beautiful villages and their ancient art, which is known by the name of Madhubani painting. The town of Madhubani has also been the center of ‘Maithili’ culture. The best time to visit Madhubani is during the time of the retreating monsoons in the months of October, November and December. Saurath, a roadside village on Madhubani-Jaynagar road, contains a temple known as Somnath Mahadev. It owes its importance to the annual Sabha held by Maithili Brahmins for negotiating marriages. Many Panjikars who keep the genealogical records of the different families reside here and outside.

16. Muzaffarpur

Muzaffarpur is a city located in Muzaffarpur district in the Tirhut region of the Indian state of Bihar. It is the fourth most populous city in Bihar.Muzaffarpur is famous for Shahi lychees and is known as the Lychee Kingdom. Shahi litchi is set to become the fourth product from Bihar, after jardalu mango, katarni rice and Maghai paan. Muzaffarpur is among the leaders in the production of litchis and its popular litchi gardens. Some of the more popular gardens include Bochaha, Jhapaha and Mushahari. 17. Pawapuri

Pawapuri or Pawa is a holy site for Jains located in the Nalanda district in the Bihar state of Eastern India. The Jal Mandir meaning Water Temple, also known as Apapuri, in Pawapuri, meaning a town without sins, in the Indian state of Bihar, is a highly revered temple dedicated to Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara (religious preacher of Jainism) and founder of Jain religion, which marks the place of his cremation. 18. Hajipur

Hajipur is the headquarters and largest city of Vaishali district of the state of Bihar in India. Hajipur is the 16th most populous city of Bihar, besides being the second-fastest developing city, next to Patna. The city is known for cultivating Bananas. Patna, is only 10 km from Hajipur, with the cities separated by the Ganges river. Mahatma Gandhi Setu, one of the longest bridges in the world at 5.75 kilometers, links Hajipur to Patna. 19. Darbhanga

 ‘Heart Of Mithilanchal’ Darbhanga is the fifth-largest city and municipal corporation in the Indian state of Bihar situated centrally in the Mithila region. Darbhanga is regarded as ‘The Cultural Capital Of The State Of Bihar’ owing to its rich heritage and cultural significance. It is one of the oldest cities in India. Musical, folk art, and literary traditions in Sanskrit and Maithili have been passed down generations in Darbhanga and constitute the city’s strong cultural background. 22. Kaimur

Kaimur district is one of the 38 districts of Bihar. The most spoken languages are Hindi and Bhojpuri mainly. Due to its close proximity to eastern Uttar Pradesh, people here have Purvanchali tinge in their language. Kaimur district has a large forest cover, which contains the Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary, home to tigers, leopards and chinkaras. Waterfalls like Karkat Waterfall and Telhar are present here.  The Karkat Waterfall was considered to be the finest waterfall by the British officer Henry Ramsay, as it is not only pristine, but is also surrounded by verdant landscapes. Now a part of the Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary, the waterfall also serves as a crocodile conservation reserve and eco-tourism spot. You can visit the Karkat Waterfall throughout the year.

23. Nawada

Nawada has a museum of national importance, the Narad Museum, which was established in 1974. Some other significant temples and religious spots within the city are The Surya Narayana Mandir, Shobhnath Mandir, Sankat Mochan and Gonawa Jal Mandir, dedicated to the first Jain guru. Famous places to visit nearby Nawada are Kakolat Waterfall, Budhauli Monastery & 52 Kothi 53 Dwar, Shri Gunnawan Ji Tirth and Indrasal Cave, Parvati.

24. Chhath puja Festival

Chhath Puja holds a special place in the Hindu mythology and it is believed that following the puja with utmost dedication can help in removing obstacles, bring prosperity and happiness to the family. According to the Hindu mythology, Chhath Puja originated from the Rig Veda. Chhath is a festival which is all about purity, devotion and offering prayer to Sun God; the exact origin of this festival is ambiguous but there are certain beliefs which connect to Hindu epics.
