About

Mizoram name is derived from “Mizo”, the self described name of the native inhabitants, and “Ram”, which in the Mizo language means “land.” Thus “Mizo-ram” means “land of the Mizos’’. Known for its evergreen hills and dense bamboo jungles, Mizoram lies in the southernmost tip of north east India. Called the Land of Blue Mountains, the hills are crisscrossed by gushing rivers and high sparkling waterfalls. It is the southernmost landlocked state, sharing borders with three of the Seven Sister States, namely Tripura, Assam and Manipur. Mizoram is host to numerous species of birds, wildlife and flora. About 640 species of birds have been identified in the state, many of which are endemic to the Himalayan foothills and southeast Asia. Mizoram is a place with flora and fauna, rich landscape and pleasant climate. The tourism ministry regulates the maintenance and upgrade of tourist lodges throughout the state.

1. Aizawl

Proving true to its name as “the home of the highlanders,” Aizawl, the capital of the northeastern state of Mizoram, is located at an altitude of 3500 feet above sea level. It is the seat of a rich tribal cultural extravaganza and is famous for its handicrafts. The town is blessed with exotic natural beauty. This is one of the oldest cities of Mizoram and attracts a lot of tourists because of the picturesque views it offers. 2. Serchhip

Serchhip  which means “citrus on top” is the smallest district in Mizoram. The Tropic of Cancer passed through the district and it is located in the central state of the mizoram. The state with the highest literacy rates all over India The district consists of a number of towns and villages lying around Serchhip. Thenzawl is the second biggest town after Serchhip. It is one of the few flat areas with a beautiful grassy landscape. Nearby Thenzawl is a spectacular waterfall called Vantawng Falls (meaning Heaven’s reaching fall). This beautiful stepped fall is easily accessible by road, and it is a place where one can hear the calling of nature silently. Some Famous Places to visit In serchhip are Chhingpuii Thlan, Hriantrengna Lung, Khawhltha Waterfall. The best time to visit to explore the serchhip to enjoy the picturesque beauty of Serchhip are March and October.

3. Lunglei

Known as  ‘the bridge of rock’, Lunglei is famous for its scenic beauty and natural setting. It is a small town, located around 170 km south of Aizawl whose name is derived from a bridge shaped rock found along Ngasih which is a tributary of the river Tlawng. For those tourists who want to add a bit of adventure in their sojourn to Mizoram, Lunglei offers them with a plethora of picnic spots to explore their inherent sporting skills and sportsman spirit. Lunglei district offers the tourists to enjoy natural splendor coupled with the rich cultural traditions of the region. 4. Champhai

Champhai is also known as” The Rice Bowl of Mizoram” , a place of business gateway between India and Myanmar. Champhai is situated along step farms of rice, due to being a major region of rice cultivation. Also, its vibrant seasonal orchids lend it a certain romanticism and aesthetic appeal. Champhai district is one of the eleven districts of Mizoram state in India. Champhai has a number of tourist attractions mostly including natural settings. It is mostly flat land which offers a stunning view of the surrounding hills. Some of the famous places to visit in Champai are Rih Dil, Murlen National Park, and Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary.

5. Mamit

The Mamit district is the fourth largest district of the state of Mizoram known as “Orange Garden of Mizoram”. The town of Mamit, the administrative headquarters of the district, is located around 95 kms from Aizawl to the west. Known for its exquisite scenic locales and magnificence, don’t miss out on adding this place in your itinerary in Mizoram. The town of Mamit and the district is primarily an agricultural hub of the state of Mizoram. 6. Saiha

Saiha in the Mara local language comes from the “Sia” which means elephant and “ha” means tooth, An elephant tooth. It was a place where a large amount of elephant teeth were found. Though the local people name the town as Siaha, Mizos called it by the name ‘Saiha’, which is purely a translated term in Mizo language. Saiha is known as the fastest growing town in Mizoram, as the population has significantly risen in the last decade. Saiha is a census town in the Saiha district in Mizoram located at an average height of 729 meters above sea level. This town is considered to be a heaven for angling enthusiasts. Some of the famous places to visit in Saiha are Palak Wildlife Sanctuary and Palak Dil.

7. Reiek

Reiek is a mountain and tourist spot 29 km from Aizawl, Mizoram, India. It rests at an elevation of 1,465 meters overlooking Aizawl and offers a view of the surrounding valleys and hills. On a clear day, the plains of Bangladesh can be seen from the top of the hill. Reiek Hill is surrounded by thick lush green temperate trees and bushes. The Anthurium Festival is organized every year by the Tourism Department and the Horticulture Department with financial support of the central government. It has a dual purpose — promoting the cultivation and marketing of the enthralling flower and attracting more tourists to the scenic beauties of Mizoram. The festival showcases the rich and rhythmic cultural dances and games of Mizoram. Fashion shows are also a regular feature of the festival. Some Famous Places to visit here in Reiek are Reiek Village.

8. Kolasib

Kolasib is a newly created district and is located on the northern tip of Mizoram sharing its northern border with Cachar District of the State of Assam.Like most other districts of Mizoram, Kolasib is bountiful in culture and natural beauty. Leisurely boating can be done by requesting some locals who would be willing to ferry around tourists. Apart from sightseeing, experiencing the local food and learning about handicrafts is another activity which travelers can partake in. Some famous places to visit in kolasib are River Tlawng and Tamdil Lake.

9. Vantawng falls

The Vantawng Falls is located 5 kilometers south of Thenzawl in Serchhip district in the Indian state of Mizoram. It is the highest uninterrupted waterfall in Mizoram. It is about 92 kilometers away from Aizawl. Tucked in between the verdant valleys with thick greenery around the waterfall seems like a river of white milk from a distance. Vantawng Khawhthla or Vantawng Falls is the highest and most spectacular of the waterfalls and cascades in the fast flowing rivers of Mizoram. It is located in the Vanva river near Thenzawl and is named after Vantawnga, who was said to be an excellent swimmer. 

10. Hmuifang

Hmuifang is a tourist spot near Aizawl, Mizoram. It is about 50 km from Aizawl. With an elevation of 1619 meters. The mountain is still covered with virgin forests reserved since all the Mizo Chief’s time. Hmuifang is a hill town at the heart of the state of Mizoram. The hill station is known for its adventure and wildlife-related activities which draws many enthusiasts to its hills. It is a land of virginal green forests and slopes untouched by human civilization. Thalfavang Kut, a Mizo festival is regularly being held in Hmuifang organized by the Tourism Department of Mizoram to promote Tourism. Different Mizo dances like Cheraw, Sawlakai, Siktuithiang lam and Chheihlam are showcased in the festival. It is a place full of promises for tourism and related activities and a paradise for adventure lovers. 

11. Dampa Tiger Reserve

Dampa Tiger Reserve is home to a diverse flora and fauna. It consists of forest interpolated with steep precipitous hills, deep valleys, jungle streams, ripping rivulets, natural salts licks. Dampa Tiger Reserve is not easily accessible unlike other parks where you can ride on a four wheeler but one has to walk through the forest if one wishes to sight animals. Bird species sighted in Dampa Tiger Reserve include great hornbill, wreathed hornbill, oriental pied hornbill, scarlet-backed flowerpecker etc. The Dampa wildlife sanctuary covers a sprawling area of over 500 square kilometers on the western side of Mizoram and touches the international boundaries of Bangladesh.

12. Tamdil (Tam lake)

Tamdil known as  ‘Lake of Mustard’ is situated near Saitual Village, about 110 kms from Aizawl. Having been developed as an important Pisciculture Centre by the Fisheries Department and a holiday resort by the Tourism Department, this is one of the most frequented lakes in the state.The place is favorite for relaxation and gives one an opportunity to be away from the crowd, in the lap of nature. Besides being a tourist destination, Tamdil Lake is also very crucial for the fisherman in the locality.

13. Phawngpui

Phawngpui also known as Blue Mountain, is the highest mountain peak in the Mizo Hills (Lushai Hills) and in the state of Mizoram, India. Phawngpui is the highest peak of the Lushai Hills. There is a semicircular series of cliffs on the western side called Thaluang Khàm, which have a sharp and deep fall; mountain goats live there. Trekking to the summit of Phawngpui is an experience no adventure lover can let go of. Being here between the mighty mountains and the sky makes you feel rejuvenated, happy and peaceful at the very least. This colorful village is going to make your trip all the more memorable. Some famous places to visit in Phawngpui is Phawngpui Blue Mountain National Park, Chhimtuipui River, Sangau and Phawngpui Mountain. 

14. Murlen National park

The tropical, semi-evergreen and sub montane Forests of Murlen are home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. About 15 species of mammals, 150 species of birds, 35 species of Medicinal plants, 2 species of bamboos, and 4 species of orchids so far have been recorded in this Park. Murlen National Park is categorized by tropical, semi-evergreen and sub mountain forests.The pleasant climate allows tourists to truly enjoy the serenity of the park and what it has to offer. The park overlooks rivers and mountain ranges further adding to its natural beauty and attractiveness.

15. Falkawn village

Falkawn is a small village situated 18 km. south of the main city of Aizawl. Depicting the lifestyle and culture of a typical Mizo village, this site is frequently visited by tourists. People are friendly and courteous in all the North East Indian States and the people of Mizoram are quite hospitable. This is a village that would give you an insight into the entire state of Mizoram and going on a cultural tour to this village. This is an appropriate destination for tourists. Some of the famous places to visit in falkawn village are Salvation Army Temple and Mizoram state museum.
